Michael Saylor Renews Push for Microsoft to Embrace Bitcoin, Projects $4.9 Trillion in Value Upside

Michael Saylor Urges Microsoft to Swap Stock Buybacks for Bitcoin, Citing 62% Outperformance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Michael Saylor calls on Microsoft to adopt Bitcoin instead of continuing stock buybacks.
  • He claims Bitcoin outperformed Microsoft stock by 62%, compared to 18% annually over the past five years.
  • Saylor showcased Strategy’s transformation after adopting Bitcoin in 2020 as proof of concept.

Bitcoin advocate and Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor is once again calling for tech giant Microsoft to embrace Bitcoin as its primary capital asset.

Speaking at the Strategy World 2025 event in Orlando, Saylor delivered a strong presentation urging Microsoft to pivot from stock buybacks to Bitcoin as a strategic treasury reserve.

According to Saylor, Microsoft’s current capital allocation strategies leave significant value on the table.

“Corporate treasuries are clinging to legacy systems while ignoring the exponential upside of digital capital,” he said during his Bitcoin treasury session.

Saylor: Bitcoin Outpaces Microsoft Stock

Saylor highlighted that Bitcoin delivered 62% annual returns over the past five years, far surpassing Microsoft's 18%. He emphasized that Bitcoin's performance exceeds the S&P 500's 14% average, calling it a superior store of value.

He compared Microsoft’s current financial structure, 5% capital and 95% expectation (valuation-based value), to what it could become with Bitcoin: 41% capital and 59% expectation.

Saylor argued that Microsoft, a digital infrastructure giant valued at over $3.2 trillion, should naturally evolve toward digital capital. “Microsoft should be powered by digital capital,” he declared. “And Bitcoin is the digital capital.”

“Rich people aren’t rich because of future expectations, they’re rich because of the assets they own,” he said, suggesting Bitcoin can de-risk enterprise value and provide hard capital to companies with deep cash reserves.

Saylor also held up his own company, Strategy, as a case study.

In August 2020, the firm held no Bitcoin and had a $1.2 billion market cap.

Today, after integrating Bitcoin into its balance sheet, it owns 555 BTC and has grown its market cap by 159%.

Saylor noted that Strategy’s stock (MSTR) has appreciated 108% in five years, far outpacing Microsoft’s 14% gain.

Microsoft Could Buy $7.84B in Bitcoin and Gain $73B If Saylor's Projection Comes True

At press time, Microsoft holds about $78.4 billion in cash reserves, according to Macrotrends data.

According to his projections, a 10% allocation, or $7.84 billion, could yield $80.9 billion by 2030 if Bitcoin reaches $1 million per coin.

This implies a potential gain of over $73 billion, significantly outpacing returns from bond holdings or stock buybacks.

This is not the first time Saylor has called on Microsoft to adopt Bitcoin.

In December 2024, he unveiled a detailed 44-slide proposal outlining how Bitcoin could serve as the next frontier for Microsoft’s financial and technological evolution.

At the time, he speculated that fully integrating Bitcoin could boost Microsoft’s market cap by nearly $5 trillion.

He even suggested an annual Bitcoin acquisition strategy, allocating $100 billion per year, far surpassing the value generated by traditional investment approaches.

However, Microsoft’s leadership has repeatedly rejected such proposals.

The board and shareholders continue to prioritize capital preservation and predictability, citing the need for stable investments to support liquidity and operational funding.
